Youth Shelters – information for volunteers
The Red Cross Youth Shelters help young people, their families and loved ones nationwide online through Nettiturvis and the Sekasin chat, as well as in five wellbeing services counties.
The Youth Shelters help around the clock, every day of the year. All of our help is free of charge and available quickly. A young person does not need a referral — they can book an appointment on Nettiturvis or contact the Youth Shelters directly.
Read more about the Youth Shelter.
At the Youth Shelters, staff and volunteers work together to help young people and their loved ones. Volunteers play an important role in the shelters' activities and in supporting young people. As a volunteer, you can also help young people online. We share volunteers together with the branches, and branches can also direct young people and their loved ones to the Youth Shelter to receive help.
If volunteering with young people is not yet familiar to you, read more about volunteering on our website.
These pages provide more information on volunteering at the Youth Shelter: how to sign up as a volunteer, how we train and induct our volunteers, and what volunteering involves. There is also information on cooperation with the branches, as well as various links to research and media material concerning the Youth Shelters. Below you will also find a summary of current volunteer training sessions and events, along with further information and instructions for volunteers and students working at the Youth Shelter.
Information about volunteering and the Youth Shelters
You can sign up as a volunteer in Oma Red Cross or by sending an email to vapaaehtoiset.turvatalo@punainenristi.fi. You can also contact your local Youth Shelter directly. Contact details can be found on our website.
A volunteer can work in the shelter's crisis accommodation, as a friend to a young person moving towards independence, as a group facilitator, or meet young people online. A meeting is arranged with every volunteer to go through the content of the volunteer work in more detail, to discuss the volunteer's suitability for the tasks, and to agree on starting the activity.
The Youth Shelter basic course helps volunteers get started. The course is a self-study online course. The course covers:
- Information about the Youth Shelters and volunteering
- Equality and the principles of a safer space
- Important instructions: Oma Red Cross, ordering an extract of the criminal records, the confidentiality undertaking and Hupsis
After the course, every volunteer completes an induction consisting of three sessions. The first induction session involves getting to know the activities together with a mentor volunteer or in a group. In the second and third sessions, the volunteer can continue working with the mentor's support or already more independently. Volunteers always have access to ongoing support and guidance from the Youth Shelter staff, who are always present and available.
Every volunteer joins the Red Cross branch of their choice. The Oma Red Cross and Hupsis systems are used. Every volunteer's criminal records extract is checked before they actually begin their work.
In crisis accommodation, the volunteer works on-call shifts at the Youth Shelter, helping with the running of the house and welcoming young people. The Youth Shelters use the electronic booking calendar Hupsis. Volunteers can book their own volunteer shifts flexibly according to their own schedule. Shifts generally run from 5 pm to 10 am, and volunteers usually have the opportunity to rest during the night. However, the work is flexible and volunteers also have the opportunity to take part in other activities with young people and other volunteers.
The Youth Shelters offer their volunteers further training, joint events, and the opportunity to progress to even more demanding tasks, both in supporting other volunteers and in meeting young people. Everyone can take part in a way that suits them, according to their own skills and interests.
As a volunteer, you can work online, for example, as an on-call volunteer in the Sekasin chat, meeting young people. You can find out more about online helping tasks either on our website at https://www.redcross.fi/become-a-volunteer/online-helper/ or by searching for online volunteer tasks in Oma Red Cross.
Almost all online help tasks require completing the self-study training "Online helper at the Red Cross". The training introduces the various tasks of online volunteers and provides comprehensive information on the special features and possible challenges of meeting people online. The training takes about 2–3 hours and can be completed at your own pace on the Red Cross Kompassi platform.
Together, branches and Youth Shelters carry out diverse voluntary activities that offer every volunteer the opportunity to help young people as well.
Every volunteer active at a youth shelter also belongs to a branch. Volunteers from many different branches work at the youth shelters, and each of them can serve as a link between their own branch and the youth shelter. Oma Red Cross serves as a shared volunteer database system for branches and youth shelters.
Branches offer their volunteers the opportunity to also participate in youth shelter activities. Volunteers involved in youth shelter activities are guided to explore the activities of the branches. Together, youth shelters and branches recruit, guide, train, and support an extensive and skilled network of Red Cross volunteers.
The goal is that the cooperation with the branches is smooth, genuine, concrete and it provides mutual benefit. Meaningful volunteering opportunities are offered to as many volunteers as possible.
