First aid groups – information for volunteers
If you feel that you have a desire to help and more energy than you need for yourself, come and join the Red Cross first aid group! In the first aid group, you will learn to help yourself and others. You can join even if you do not yet know how to provide first aid. Interest alone is enough. The activity is voluntary, but for many it becomes a way of life. Through group activities, you will gain a rewarding hobby and new friends.
As actively as you want
First aid groups meet regularly to learn and practise first aid and psychological support skills. Depending on your interests, you will also learn to use radio handsets, orienteering, group leadership and training. Training in the first aid group is free of charge, and no prior skills are required. Within the group, you will be guided to courses as needed.
Come and be on duty at events!
First aid groups are on duty throughout the year at a variety of events, taking care of first aid for those present. Each year, duties are carried out at approximately 3,000 events and around 13,000 people are assisted. You can take part in duties once you are of legal age, train regularly in the first aid group and hold a valid duty authorisation.
Ready to help immediately
Some first aid group members also take part in emergency call-out tasks as part of the Voluntary Rescue Service (Vapepa). Authorities alert the volunteers of emergency groups to assist in accidents, searches, evacuations and demanding special situations alike.
How to join?
Finnish Red Cross first aid groups can now be found in almost every municipality in our country. In total, there are approximately 3,000 first aid group members. Don't hesitate to contact the leader of the first aid group in your local area or the responsible person in your district. You can also sign up online, in which case we will contact you.
