Advanced course for first aid standby volunteers

Course introduction

The course is continuing education for volunteers active as first aid standby volunteers. It deepens competence for working as a first aid standby volunteer, and a core focus is also on how to lead a first aid pair/patrol operating in a standby service situation.

Target group

The course is intended for Finnish Red Cross first aid standby volunteers whose standby duty authorization is valid. Participants must have adequate physical and mental fitness, as well as stress tolerance. Particularly recommended for individuals who already feel "confident about basic first aid standby duties".

Learning objectives

• The participant is able to act as a first aid standby volunteer as part of a pair or a patrol.
• The participant is able to lead a pair or patrol of first aid standby volunteers in a first aid standby service situation.
• The participant is able to cooperate with stakeholders related to first aid standby services, for example, the event organizer, the emergency response centre, and Red Cross actors.
• The participant is able to provide first aid as a first aid standby volunteer in situations that require more advanced first aid skills.
• The participant is able to explain the importance of a debriefing session.
• Is able to handle communications correctly as part of the overall standby duty operations.

Prerequisites

The basic training requirements for the course are the completed FRC First Aid Course EA1® (the first aid course does not need to be valid!) and the Basic Course for First Aid Standby Volunteers. The participant must also have a valid standby duty authorization, experience in first aid standby service operations, and knowledge of the basics of communications.

Certificate

Credit-rated Sivis training model: The training is credit-rated, and the scope of the training is 1.5 credits. Credit-rated certificates are issued by Study Centre Sivis; the district or local branch that organized the training enters the records of completion into the Sivis study register. Through the Sivisverkko study register, you can view your own details and print your own certificates if you have identified yourself in Sivisverkko. Identification can be completed, for example, using your personal online banking credentials.

Delivery methods

The contact teaching of the training is 13 hours in duration and consists of both remote and in-person study. The detailed scheduling and delivery method of the course vary slightly by region. In addition, an online training module is completed independently.

Trainers

The training can be led by volunteer trainers of Red Cross first aid group activities.
