In the Finnish Red Cross, leadership and management skills are needed in a wide variety of roles: on the boards of branches, districts, and the national organization, in key volunteer positions, as supervisors and directors, and in various expert roles.

The organization's leadership training is designed to strengthen the skills necessary for leading a preparedness and volunteer organization.

“The best thing has been bringing leadership themes into the Red Cross context. It has reinforced and solidified the idea of one common Red Cross. My self-confidence has grown.”

Training themes include:

  • What kinds of changes are occurring within the organization and in volunteering.
  • How core principles and organizational values provide a solid foundation for leadership.
  • How to lead your own functional goals based on the common strategy with a coaching approach.
  • The principles and methods used to lead local and national operations in various roles.
  • Specific considerations when leading a network or within networks.
  • The view of humanity behind modern leadership.
  • How to create a psychologically safe and motivating environment.
  • How to build a strong positive connection between people and, on that basis, well-being and productive teams and communities.
  • Additionally, the training includes a visit to the Kalkku Logistics Center.

The diversity of the participants is one of the key principles of the leadership training, allowing for a comprehensive perspective on organizational activities and leadership. Participants are selected from among volunteers and employees from different parts of the organization and various fields of activity.

“It has greatly opened up the activities of the entire organization, brought many new contacts, and clarified my own volunteer role in overall preparedness. I would recommend the course to anyone interested in the FRC!”
