Homework clubs and Homework Help

As a Homework Help tutor, you help children, young people, or adults with their homework and with the Finnish or Swedish language. Some Homework Help activities operate, for example, in primary schools, where you help young schoolchildren with their homework after school hours. There are also Homework Help activities for adults who face challenges with the Finnish or Swedish language.

Prior teaching experience is not required to act as a homework club tutor. It is enough that you are interested in teaching, want to help and motivate children, young people, or adults in their schooling, and want to inspire them to search for information and learn new things.

In many migrant families, parents do not know how or are unable to support their children on their school path and in their studies in the way they would like. The presence of safe adults in homework clubs is therefore valuable in itself. In homework clubs, the aim is to make learning fun – things are also learned through various games and play.

The target groups of Homework Help can include, for example:

• children and young people in basic education
• young people and adults in vocational education who face challenges with the Finnish or Swedish language
• adults past compulsory school age who are studying the basic education syllabus

When establishing a Homework Help activity, it is advisable to contact local educational institutions to identify needs and potential cooperation opportunities. From the district, the branch will receive support for recruiting volunteers, organising training, and starting activities in your locality.
